Randpark High’s rugby clinic a hit

In groups of four players each, wrestling and rolling mauls are practised.

Rand Park High School teamed up with their rugby coaching staff to bring the culture of rugby to primary school players from far and wide.

The rugby clinic was hosted at the high school from 30 March until 1 April.

The primary school boys learn how to tackle with the correct shoulder.

About 40 primary school rugby players from the area started their programme with footwork, passing and catching.

The young boys were super excited to feel what it was like to play at high school level.

The next day saw the boys learning the important skill of tackling. Sean Johnson, Rand Park’s 1st team coach said,

“It is so important for the boys to learn how to tackle properly and safely at a young age. It is a common mistake that can result in serious injury. It is great to teach them when they are young.”

Boys tackle each other to the ground.

High-ball and counter-attacking skills were taught on the last day with some rucking and wrestling drills.

Families and friends arrived on the final day to enjoy a delicious braai at the school, ending in a group trip to watch the Lions play the Sharks at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park).

Rand Park’s first team coach Sean Johnson makes sure the boys learn how to tackle low.

“It really is about the spirit of rugby and instilling a sense of pride and skill from a young age. We at Rand Park are happy to host players from primary schools, thank you to the coaches, family and players who made it a successful rugby clinic,” concluded Johnson.

Each player has their turn to counter attack a tackle.
