Babies Behind Bars needs your help

Baby Behind Bars collects baby clothes, toys, toiletries, nappies and books for the babies.

Babies Behind Bars provides support for babies from birth to two years old while they live with their mothers who are in correctional facilities across the country.

The team of volunteers and board of directors, headed up by Romy Titus try to make sure that the basic necessities and needs of these precious babies are taken care of.

This is done by collecting donations from across the country, either through private individuals or sponsors.

Babies Behind Bars have made it easier for anyone to assist by having multiple drop-off points across South Africa where basic items such as baby food, clothes, toiletries, toys, books and blankets are greatly appreciated.

Some of the drop-off points include Boskruin, Kya Sand, Northcliff and Parktown. The organisation’s website has pinpointed the drop-off areas with exact addresses.

They work with about 18 to 21 prisons across the country as well as neighbouring countries when they can. Every second month volunteers come together at packing points to collate and organise all the donations to be boxed and delivered to various prisons.

Candice Africa, one of the board members said,

“We are in desperate need of any donations, sponsors or volunteers that can help us take care of the very basic needs of these babies. The donations are solely for the babies.”

The non-profit organisation can face a lot of red tape when dealing with prisons, however, some prisons equip the team with a wish list which may include any items that they desperately need, from nappies to clothing and soap. The paperwork and procedures can be tough with only the very basic information given for each child such as age and gender.

Here is an example of the items packed into one box for a prison in Kimberley.

“Babies always deserve the best, no matter where they are and what they have, nothing beats equipping their moms to care for them in the healthiest ways,” said Titus.
