Learning an additional or foreign language could be of great benefit in South Africa, especially in the job market.
According to new data from Adunza, an online jobs portal, additional language skills are most in demand by employers in the country.
Some of these skills could help employees earn higher salaries.
The online website indicated that being bilingual or knowing a foreign language was not only beneficial to the employment sector, but it could also help obtain work visas while moving to other countries which require a certain level of competence in its official language(s).
Adzuna stated that although many of these positions are for call centre or sales roles, it was interesting to note that South African languages, which were added into the mix researched, showed promising results.
The group did not include English in their research as it was deemed ubiquitous, but included some of the country’s languages which are Zulu, Xhosaand Afrikaans.
Chinese or Mandarin, Japanese, Xhosa and Zulu topped the rankings in terms of average salary.
The top languages with jobs in demand offered the highest salary and included Mandarin with an average R335 863 salary, followed by Japanese offering a salary of R335 625. This was followed by Zulu, Xhosa, French, Finnish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Arabic, Spanish, Turkish, Swahili, Italian and Afrikaans at the bottom of the ranking.
