The children and staff of Wandsworth School were delighted to receive a cheque for R11 250 from Randburg Harriers.

Funds were raised at the Run With a Heart charity club run which took place on 16 December last year, with more than 50 participants who made contributions based on what they could afford. They raised R4 060 during the run. A further R18 440 has been raised through other company contributions and donations.

Wandsworth School’s principal, Deirdre Maritz said, “Thank you to all who contributed and thank you for supporting our school and our children.”

The school caters for schoolchildren with severe special needs such as cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, various genetic syndromes and multi-sensory disorders.

The children benefit from the diverse combination of foundation stage learning and the Montessori curriculum, which facilitates children working through elementary milestones towards age-appropriate academic markers at their own pace.

A second cheque is handed over to Wandsworth School by Randburg Harriers members.

The school is run on school fees, but this barely covers even the most basic costs. It is not funded by the government and relies on fundraising throughout the year.

Randburg Harriers  had a big surprise for the school when they presented yet another cheque for over R9 000.

This money was raised by collecting a percentage of the KFC Night Run entry fees.

Randburg Harriers chairman, Mornay Durant added, “Meeting the staff and the children and seeing how much they benefit from this school puts everything into perspective. We are happy the funds will be used to better the lives of the children and staff at Wandsworth School.”

The school’s operations director, Angie Robinson said, “We are incredibly grateful for the effort they went to to raise funds for our school.”
