Children of Avenir Private School have collected more than 400 bottles to help with the hyacinth crisis at Hartbeespoort Dam.

The school’s head of department, Laura Mawdsley said, “We have been collecting bottles for Harties since the beginning of the last term and in just five weeks we have managed to collect more than 400 bottles.

“Last week Sunday we were only on 300… So in the last week our learners and their parents have really pulled together to contribute to this great cause.”

The school, which has been running since the beginning of this year, caters to youngsters who cannot gain entry into larger government schools.

When asked what the inspiration was behind the bottle initiative at the school, she said, “I thought this would be a great educational initiative to get our learners and their parents behind.

“Personally, Hartbeespoort has always been a family place growing up and it is very sad that families cannot visit at the moment because of this problem.

According to Mawdsley, the school hopes to deliver the bottles before the weekend so they can be delivered to the dam on Monday.

“I think the bottle initiative has been widely successful and we are very proud of our kids.”

Caxton Newspapers will deliver more than 2 000 bottles to Hartebeespoort Dam on 27 November to help with the water hyacinth relief efforts.

Caxton Newspapers thanked all the schools and community members who came together to collect bottles to support the cause.
