Sundowner erosion under control

The roads agency has reinforced the banks of the river that runs through Sundowner and it will not threaten nearby properties in the short-term.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has been hard at work to prevent soil erosion in Sundowner.

Park Village, a residential complex next to the river in Sundowner, is most at risk due to it being only metres away from the river’s bank.

Now, the bank has been strengthened with stones and rubble as a temporary solution.

The roads agency has reinforced the banks of the river that runs through Sundowner and it will not threaten nearby properties in the short-term.

Resident Robin Linton said the community was committed to installing a drain and underground pipe extension to handle the storm water run-off that flows through Park Village from Taurus Road. This installation will be done at the expense of the residents.

“Ward councillor Wendy Alexander has been instrumental in getting the roads agency to address the erosion threat,” said Linton.

“There is only one storm water drain in Taurus Road and its outlet into the river will need to be cleared of sand to facilitate the drainage. They will install a curb at the entrance to Park Village to redirect water to road storm water drains.”

Also, the Sundowner Residents Association has been financing the cutting of all grass along the Sundowner Park and dam.

According to the roads agency, the park and dam are not level 1 priorities where life, limb and property are at risk.

The reinforced banks of the river that runs through Sundowner will see the residents sleep peacefully at night.
