Interim Region B security committee selected

After Metro police chief David Tembe had made his way across Johannesburg, interacting with various communities through public meetings, a Metro police facilitated and community-led committee has been established to help fight crime.

Community Policing Forums (CPFs), business forums, block watches and South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) members, all from Region B, attended a stakeholder forum meeting at the Metro police headquarters in Martindale on 5 September.

The meeting was held at Metro police headquarters in Martindale and attended by various security-related stakeholders.

Tembe’s stakeholder relations manager, Thobekile Twala, said the point of the meeting was to look at the draft terms of the stakeholder forum so that it could be presented to council and adopted.

“JMPD [Metro police] will be here as observers, we will attend the [stakeholder forum] meetings,” said Twala. “We are handing this over to the community to run with it. We are here to help.”

The interim management community-led committee was elected to take further meetings forward until the community selects the official management structure.

Geoff Leach of Linden’s CPF was selected as the secretary, Lillian Baloyi of Sanco was selected as the deputy secretary, Willie van der Schyf of the Randburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry was selected as the deputy chair and Sanco’s Phashe Magagane was selected as the chairperson.

They will soon meet and communicate with the public about the way forward.
